Discrimination against Dalits in india

Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ) at New York University School of Law submit the following information to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (“Committee” or CERD) for consideration in its review of India’s fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth periodic reports under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

This joint-submission is based on in-depth HRW investigations on caste discrimination in India and the findings of Indian governmental and non-governmental organizations on caste-based abuses. Discriminatory and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of over 186 million people in India has been justified on the basis of caste. Caste is descent-based and hereditary in nature. It is a characteristic determined by one’s birth into a particular caste, irrespective of the faith practiced by the individual. Caste denotes a traditional system of rigid social stratification into ranked groups defined by descent and occupation. Caste divisions dominate in housing, marriage, employment, and general social interaction—divisions that are reinforced through the practice and threat of social ostracism, economic boycotts, and physical violence. This report focuses on the practice of “untouchability”—the imposition of social disabilities on persons by reason of their birth in certain castes. This practice relegates Dalits, or so-called untouchables (known in Indian legal parlance as scheduled castes), to a lifetime of discrimination, exploitation and violence, including severe forms of torture perpetrated by state and private actors in violation of the rights guaranteed by the Convention. Although the practice has been condemned by many Indian leaders, including most recently by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, unless the government accepts responsibility to end the widespread prejudice, crimes against Dalits will continue. India has consistently cited its numerous legislations and government policies as a measure of compliance with its obligations to end caste-based discrimination, choosing to ignore its failure to implement these measures which has resulted in continued, and sometimes enhanced, brutalities against Dalits.

HRW and the CHRGJ respectfully request that the following issues be raised in the List of Issues addressed to the State Party and in the State Party examination.

Jai Bhim !

We Dalits should throw all these filthy ‘Cows’ into garbage.

What the holy crap is going on here, what is this thread all about!
so much of hate propaganda! Maligning your own culture and your own country. No one has the right to disturb the peace in others lives.
We made out constitution and implemented successfully to address all such discrimination and violations and violence. Its a pity if we don\t comply to our own constitution, the father of he constitution will not be happy with this he may bleed to know how we are cultivating animosity toward each other.

the person above talks about maligning our “own” culture. what is our culture? because of brahmins, thousands of our folk traditions, folk literature, folk dances and misic are not even represented properly. only bharatanatyam or classical music is shown to the world as indian forms of art. this is because brahmins taught these only to their kids and showed that as indian art, not the real india’s art. now, all brahmins have made a vicious scheme to dig money from government to preserve their brahmin arts. this is through bharatiya vidya bhavanas in different states. there they only teach the brahmin arts, even though their purpose is to preserve many forms of indian arts. one brahmin violin teacher asked my caste before agreeing to teach me violin. this is how racist brahmins are.

common man.. this show how immature we all are! those forms which are able to flourish has dedicated artists and sponsers! and other folk cultures didnt fluorish thought it has dedicated artists bcz of so called rulers of the state or country! why are you blaming the bhrahmin community.
This is the truth open ur eyes dont blame the great figures. read it and know it what miserable life they had..

then blame… understood!

What i wanted to say is.. there is oppression in our culture and societies I agree to it… to the extent that are pure man made.. things due to the social dominance under the security of the rulers… purely castism or varnasrama based!

its a social devil.. nothing religious or nothing cultural…

Be mature!

there were pros there were cons..

@suman
We have to change buddy! no god will help or no fellow human will help or no fellow politicial or nor ambetkars constitution can help..
why i am saying this is its more than 50 yrs we have the gr8 constituation in place! then why not the equality prevails in our society.. its bcz of the nature of typical indian attitude which is always.. let it go and give a shit to the society kind..

we have to change this unless this kind of attitude changes we can never achive what ambetkar dreamed of .. a socieity of real freedom free of caste creed religion.. society of equality…

If you dont agree to me.. then u must review urself..

regards
ravi
